Newspapers talk over the new Movie Industry:

Sierra Leonean Movies Making Headway
By Aruna Turay, May 28, 2012,

It is now an open secret that, home made Sierra Leonean movies are gradually taking the lead to those of other African movies. A greater percentage of African film lovers are now appreciating Sierra Leonean movies to that of Nigerian or Ghanaian movies which has flooded the local market.

It could be recalled that, the film industry in Sierra Leone started at a period when a large percentage of Sierra Leoneans, especially women and young people were having greater interest in watching Nigerian or Ghanaian films.

The industry started booming some three years ago, when Sierra Leonean film makers started contracting foreign writers and directors to help them in putting their scripts together. When the first movies, including Blood Diamonds, Hawa, Aminata, among others, were introduced, Sierra Leoneans started growing appetite to watch them. Though some of these movies were of low quality, they managed to stand the test of time.

Despite this, a large percentage of Sierra Leoneans were still having their taste on Ghanaian and Nigerian movies. But with the coming onboard of talented local writers and directors, such as Jimmy B, Dr. Spencer, T.J. Cole, Michael Ibrahim Kamara, Sulaiman Bah, among others, in the industry with sophisticated cameras and equipments, the face of Sierra Leonean movies started growing rapidly. With most of the recently produced movies, like Dagadi, Beauty Cause, State Crime, Zina, Family Enemy, Lost Hope, and Zymat, among other movies, one can hardly tell the difference between local and foreign African films.

“Sierra Leonean films are very educative and have high ethics and morals that are suitable for all category viewers including children of all ages. They can not be compared to those from Nigeria and Ghana in which in most cases, have immoral scenes that are unfit for children’s view” said Dr. Spencer, a film maker adding of how they portray the country’s local traditions and culture. He called for promotion of such films.

Soldiers of Fortune (2000) - Mercenaries, allegedly working for the Sierra Leone government, have been charged with defeating RUF rebels - but blood diamonds might be their true goal.

Inside a helicopter mercenaries led by South African Neall Ellis fly fast and low over RUF rebel areas, shooting anything that moves. There is plenty of evidence suggesting that, while ostensibly working for the Sierra Leone government, they are in fact the military arm of the diamond mining companies.
