EFF Leader Julius Malema says South Africa is run by an illegitimate government. Speaking at Majwemasweu in Winnie Mandela - formerly known as Brandfort - in the Free State, Malema said Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has no power to overrule Parliament, as the VAT reversal decision has to be done in Parliament. Malema says the country will continue to suffer in terms of access to health care, education and improving infrastructure if budget is not passed.

South Africa's New Envoy to US Called Trump "Homophobic" and "Racist" In 2020 | Firstpost Africa

South Africa’s new envoy to the US, Mcebisi Jonas, is under fire for comments he made back in 2020, when he called Donald Trump “racist, homophobic, and narcissistic” after Joe Biden won the US election. These remarks have resurfaced just as Jonas steps into his new role, tasked with fixing the tense relationship between the two countries. Things got worse earlier this year when Trump’s administration expelled South Africa’s ambassador and froze US aid over land reforms. Trump has also criticised South Africa’s case against Israel at the ICJ and claimed the country supports hostile regimes. As Jonas takes office, both sides face the challenge of moving past heated words and rebuilding diplomatic ties.

NADECO has also asked President Tinubu to implement the report of Nasir El-Rufai Panel which recommended that the APC should fulfill its manifesto promise of returning Nigeria to Federal Constitutional Governance.
The group believes an upgrade of economic reforms, infrastructure development, and modernization of the education sector is urgently needed considering the national endowment and resources the country possesses.

How centuries of division built one of the most unequal countries on earth.

For decades, South Africa was under apartheid: a series of laws that divided people by race. Then, in the 1990s, those laws were dismantled. But many of the barriers they created continue to divide South Africans by skin color - which in turn determines their quality of life, access to jobs, and wealth. Racial division was built into the fabric of cities throughout South Africa, and it still hasn't been uprooted.

That's partly because, while apartheid was the culmination of South Africa's racial divisions, it wasn't the beginning of them. That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transformed the region's economy into one that excluded most Black people -- and then made that exclusion the law.

The latest polling of voters by the Institute of Race Relations has thrown up what the IRR’s Hermann Pretorius describes as a “political earthquake” - a watershed rarely seen in SA’s leading think-tank’s 96 year history. Pretorius unpacks results of the twice a year survey which was conducted, co-incidentally, at the time of the Budget furore. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

The most recent election in Liberia has seen retired football star George Weah become that country's 25th president.
There was the Kenyan elections that had to be re-run.
President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said he would step down ahead of Angolan elections.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame seeked a third term.
Let's not also forget about the Zimbabwe coup ousting President Robert Mugabe from 37-years in power. To unpack this for us, we are joined by Advocate Sipho Mantula Reseacher at the Institute for Dispute Resolution in Africa at UNISA.

The South African political landscape this year has been fraught with internal fights in parties, some grappling to get their houses in order and perceived racism. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa seems to be facing a rebellion, led by legally and politically embattled Secretary-General Ace Magashule, while the DA under the leadership of John Steenhuisen failed to perform in recent by-elections and saw membership numbers drop. The EFF appeared to keep a low profile but embarked on a few anti-racism drives.

Samkele Maseko takes a look at the highs and lows of the ANC, DA and EFF in the political year that was.

Ramaphosa Sends South African Diplomats to US to Mend Ties | Firstpost Africa

South Africa sent a delegation of senior diplomats to Washington to clarify 'misconceptions' from the Trump administration that have soured bilateral ties. The delegation was led by South Africa’s G-20 Sherpa, Zane Dangor, who met with the U.S. National Security Council’s Africa Director, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Treasury Department representatives. This meeting comes after the U.S. expelled veteran South African Ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, last month over his controversial remarks against U.S. President Donald Trump. This followed US aid cuts over Trump’s claims about land confiscation in South Africa under its land reforms. Trump also offered white South Africans refugee status in the US. Watch for more details.
