The Central African Republic (CAR) known in French as République centrafricaine, is a central African nation that has seen decades of coups, rebellions, and violence since its independence from France in 1960. It's been in the news recently as a new and unlikely coalition of rebels comprising of both Christian Anti-Balaka and Muslim Ex-Séléka has surrounded the capital Bangui and is currently battling against UN peacekeepers for control.

The Central African Republic's dry season is coming to an end and recent heavy rains over the capital Bangui led to power and water #shortages for 10 days. But for hundreds of thousands of the city's residents, this was nothing new. The company that supplies running water to #Bangui was created in 1970, when it served some 100,000 people. The city's population has since grown to 1.5 million people, very few of whom have daily access to running water. Our correspondent Clément Di Roma reports.

In the war-torn Central African Republic, former rebels who mounted a coup in 2013 are now dreaming of independence. FRANCE 24’s reporters James André and Anthony Fouchard went to meet one of the most powerful armed groups in the country, in the capital of their parallel state in the north.
Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic has never truly experienced peace. In March 2013, a coalition of rebel groups called the Seleka seized power in country’s fifth coup d'état. Leaders on all sides exploited religious tensions for political ends and the country descended into violence. The Seleka, led by Michel Djotodia, was forced to give up power after nine months, completely unable to restore security. Under UN auspices, France deployed more than 2,000 soldiers to restore a fragile peace and avoid what it called a “genocide".
But President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who was elected in March 2016, has still not managed to bring calm to a country devastated by civil war. On the contrary: violence actually resumed in the capital Bangui in April 2018.
►► On France24.com: Central African Republic's president Touadéra slams 'enemies of the peace'
Since being routed, the rebels have been divided and fragmented, but have maintained their ability to cause trouble. The Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (known by its French acronym FPRC) is one of the most powerful armed groups. Abdoulaye Hissène, the FPRC’s military leader, is based in the northeastern town of Ndélé, but is massing his troops at the gates of Bangui.
Towards a partition of the country?
Although the prospect of a fresh coup seems unlikely, everyone is wondering about a possible partition of the country. The rebels prefer to talk about federalism and autonomy. Although they control all the main roads, provide security and even levy taxes, they do not want to create the impression of cutting ties with the central government, which does not consider the north a priority. The FPRC now wants to improve its image, severely tarnished after the violence of 2013.
The rebels are literally sitting on a gold and diamond mine, the northeast being rich in natural resources. This is attracting Russian private security companies, officially invited by the central government to train army recruits. The climate is tense, but in the meantime, Abdoulaye Hissène knows very well that the weak army cannot dislodge him.
"My men are in Bangui, they are just waiting for the political green light," he says. Whether he’s bluffing or not, guns speak louder than words and appear to be the main negotiating method in this region.

For Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the conflict in Central African Republic (CAR) was unique: seeing a country descend into violence before its very eyes, being surround by killings and witnessing an entire community being targeted without being able to provide protection.

When the Seleka rebel coalition offensive began, MSF teams were already firmly established in the country. This documentary explores many of the questions raised by this situation: Did the teams know what was to come? What did they make of the increasing violence and the events taking place? What operational response was called for? Should MSF call for armed intervention? And what should the international community be doing? What assistance can MSF provide now?

In this episode, I wake up in a small village in the Central African Republic, where I asked to spend the night, because night fell in the jungle and I had nowhere to go. The villagers and their chief immediately took me in, and insisted I park my motorcycle inside the house as well. The people in this part of the Central African Republic are some of the best people I've ever met - and I will never forget their hospitality!

People in Central Africa Republic's capital Bangui often cannot count on getting through a day with a reliable power supply. Businesses struggle and homes are plunged into darkness because of an energy shortfall that means that sometimes there's electricity for only about eight hours a day, with poorer neighbourhoods in particularly badly hit. France 24's correspondents went to find out more.

In May 2017, a Catholic Mission in Bangassou in the Central African Republic became a symbol of resistance. Priests formed a human chain to defend Muslims from a massacre by Christian majority anti-balaka militants. The priests sheltered the persecuted Muslim community for four years. Caroline Dumay and Stefan Carstens report on the current state of reconciliation in Bangassou, in a country where some 15 armed groups are still active.

Since 2018, mercenaries from Russia's Wagner Group, an effective secret army of the Kremlin, have been active in Central African Republic. They protect the impoverished country's regime in exchange for valuable mineral resources and deploy a massive propaganda campaign to cover up the massacres, rapes and torture they are accused of. Taking advantage of France's loss of influence in its former colony, Russia is seen to be using Central African Republic – a country ripped apart by decades of civil war – as a testing ground in a new battle for global influence. FRANCE 24's Carol Valade and Clément Di Roma report.

The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.

CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.

In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.

Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.

CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.

"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.

The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

This is the hardest I've ever worked to find, plan and execute a story in terms of logistics, finances and production. It took me 2 months to plan and 35 hours to edit. It's also the longest video I've ever made, at 15 minutes, and I really hope you watch it all because I love this kind of storytelling. It's the reason why I travel.

The pygmies are a group of tribal ethnicities native to Central Africa (Gabon, Cameroon, DRC and Central African Republic). About 900,000 of them in total are entirely dependent on the dense forest for survival. Genetically speaking, they are the world's shortest ethnic group for unknown reasons.

I just spent 24 hours with them here in a remote part of Central African Republic and I made this story from my experience. Please note that I had full permission from the chief to make this story and he was very happy that I came, as you'll hear about in the interview after the credits.

If you find this story interesting, please share it with your friends! I also welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback!

The Central African Republic (CAR) has been mired in chaos since its independence in 1960, plagued by coups, civil war, and weak governance. Fourteen rebel groups control most of the country, with public services nearly nonexistent. While locals face dire conditions, foreign powers like Russia exploit CAR's instability, vying for influence through military and political interventions. Once involved, France's retreat has left many citizens feeling abandoned amid ongoing violence and exploitation.
