Synopsis :

When Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 departed from Addis Ababa on November 23, 1996, it was carrying 163 passengers and 12 crew members. Among them were an American diplomat, a legendary news cameraman, and a deadly plan.

From Season 3 Episode 13 "Ocean Landing": Twenty minutes into the flight, the three young men rushed the cockpit and hijacked the aircraft. They demanded that the plane switch course to Australia – an 11-hour flight. It was a suicidal request – the plane had only three hours of fuel.
Captain Leo Abate had been hijacked twice before. When he was unable to convince the hijackers to change their destination, he developed a backup plan. Without their knowledge, he headed toward the tiny Comoros Islands. An airport there might be his last chance.

On 23 November 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 is forced to ditch after running out of fuel. The aircraft breaks up as the wings hit the water, killing 125 people. The aircraft had been hijacked and ran out of fuel because the hijackers did not believe the pilot's insistence that there was not enough fuel aboard to make it to the hijackers' planned destination, Australia.

En république démocratique du Congo, pour aller de Kinshasa la capitale, à Kisangani la grande ville du Nord, il n’y a plus aucune route. Le manque d’entretien et la forêt envahissante l’ont fait disparaître petit à petit. Pour transporter leurs marchandises ou pour voyager entre ces deux villes, les congolais n’ont que deux solutions : l’avion pour les plus riches, le billet coûte l’équivalent de 6 mois de salaire, ou le bateau pour les plus pauvres, un voyage éprouvant de 2000 kilomètres sur le Congo, l’un des plus grands fleuves d’Afrique. De vieux bateaux comme le « Gbémani » en assurent la liaison. Il transporte près de 2000 personnes dans des conditions de sécurité et d’hygiène d’un autre âge. Un voyage en enfer pour ces passagers qui va durer trois semaines. Ce bateau ressemble à un vrai bidonville flottant. La promiscuité et le manque d’hygiène provoquent l’arrivée de certaines maladies comme la dysenterie. Les passagers qui ne peuvent pas se payer d’eau potable, n’hésitent pas à boire l’eau du fleuve. Tous les jours, René, le capitaine du Gbémani, adresse une prière à son créateur pour que le voyage se passe sans accident. Pour les capitaines, le fleuve Congo est un véritable cauchemar. Les panneaux de signalisation indiquant les rochers et les épaves, n’existent plus et la seule carte à bord date de la colonisation belge. Le Gbémani n’est équipé d’aucun instrument de navigation moderne, pas de radar, ni même de sondeur. Le capitaine et les copilotes doivent naviguer à vue jour et nuit. Chaque année, sur ce fleuve, les naufrages causent la mort de plusieurs centaines de personnes…
