Egypt has the biggest cinema industry in the Middle East, producing more commercial films then all other Arab countries combined. But for the next three years, the holy month of Ramadan, which is based on the lunar calender, will fall in the height of summer -- which is usually the top season for cinema in Egypt. It means production companies are facing a massive drop in ticket sales. A natural-sound version of an AFPTV report

http://www.euronews.com/ It is a film title to sum up events in Egypt, 'Winter of Discontent'. As director Ibrahim el-Batout stood among the crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square on the eve of Hosni Mubarak's overthrow last year, his first instinct was to start filming.

A call to actor Amr Waked and actress Farah Youssef, and within a few hours the trio were shooting a scene in Tahrir in which a man searches for his girlfriend amid the throng. 'Winter of Discontent' was in production.

The movie sends out a message of hope that marks a more upbeat departure for the Egyptian director who spent almost two decades portraying the despair of war.

Watch out video report for a taste of the film and some thoughts from the director.

The Abandoned Cinema in Egypt, also known as Cinema of the Desert, is a surreal, unfinished outdoor theater located in the Sinai Peninsula, near Sharm El Sheikh. The cinema was originally constructed by a group of Europeans with the idea of offering a unique movie-watching experience in the vast desert landscape. It consists of rows of wooden seats and a large screen frame, surrounded by the barren beauty of the Egyptian desert.

However, the cinema was never used. Legend has it that technical issues, such as power supply problems or local disapproval, prevented the first screening, leaving the project abandoned. Over time, the desert's harsh conditions have weathered the seats and structure, turning the site into an eerie, picturesque relic.

Today, the abandoned cinema remains a mysterious and unusual landmark, attracting adventurous tourists intrigued by its story and haunting appearance in the middle of the desert.

Q&K Paul Sedra
Anxiety About the Urban in 1950s Egyptian Cinema
Monday, May 04, 2015
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Hall, Room P071, AUC New Cairo

Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations

As part of the Qahwa and Kalam series, Paul Sedra, associate professor of history at Simon Fraser University, will give a talk titled "Life or Death: Anxiety About the Urban in 1950s Egyptian Cinema."

Life or Death (Haya aw mawt) is a classic of Egyptian cinema, widely interpreted retrospectively by scholars as an ode to progress, modernity, the nation and, the chief emblem of such, the burgeoning city. Indeed, the film was included in the list of "the most important 100 Egyptian films," commissioned by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in 2006. Released in 1954, the film is associated by critics and scholars with the 1952 Free Officers’ Revolution and the spirit of nationalism and civic duty. In this talk Sedra will discuss the suspicion and ambivalence about the urban that pervade a film like Life or Death. In focusing upon the bustling urban life that the film so richly illustrates, scholars have set aside this invocation of death in the title as unimportant or inconsequential. Yet, this is a film much concerned with death. That is to say, this is a film about the potential death of a way of life, a death whose perceived imminence is lamented to no small extent in the film.

In this first installment of our Egyptian cinema series on The African Cinema Podcast, we trace the roots of filmmaking in Egypt—starting with the arrival of the Lumière Brothers’ projector in Alexandria in 1896. This episode dives into the rise of Egypt’s first studios, the political ferment of the 1919 revolution, and the emergence of Egyptian filmmakers who shaped cinema as a cultural and national force.

Following our exploration of Nigerian cinema, this new arc expands the lens to Egypt—a country whose early cinematic journey defined film across the Arab world.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

How and when cinema first arrived in Egypt

Why Alexandria became the launchpad for moving pictures in the region

The story of Aziz & Dorés: the Middle East’s first film studio

Mohamed Bayoumi’s revolutionary role in shaping Egyptian cinema

How nationalist politics and colonial resistance shaped early storytelling

The significance of Barsoum Looking for a Job (1923)

The rise of Aziza Amir and the making of Layla, Egypt’s first narrative feature

The role of Talaat Harb and the founding of Misr Acting and Cinema

How early Egyptian cinema reflected and helped shape cultural identity

This is part of our ongoing deep-dive into African cinematic histories—following our Nigerian cinema series. Here, we begin the Egyptian arc, setting the stage for the Golden Age to come.

We’ll explore the rise of Studio Misr and the 1940s–1960s golden era of Egyptian cinema, where film became not just national but continental in its influence.
