An international team of scientists and explorers, lead by Dr Julian Bayliss, go on an extraordinary mission in Mozambique to reach a forest that no human has set foot in. The team, including some of the world’s foremost climate change experts, aims to collect data from the forest to help in our understanding of how climate change is affecting our planet. But the forest sits atop a mountain, and to reach it, the team must first climb a sheer 100m wall of rock. The scientists’ work is based on research conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

The most beautiful thing about a man’s life is his freedom.

He may not have any food, and he may not have any clothing, but at least he has his freedom.

Reasonable minds may disagree, but for Mozambique’s Samora Machel, freedom was a cause worth dying for. And from cradle to grave, this revolutionary cult hero would devote his life to a quest for justice, freedom and equality for him, and for his people.

This is the story of a man, and his nation. A story of great triumph, and great tragedy. This is the story of Samora Moises Machel and the birth of his beloved country, Mozambique.

Based on Mia Coutou's acclaimed Portuguese novel of the same name.

In the midst of Mozambique's devastating civil war, Muidinga, an orphaned refugee, wanders the countryside in search of his mother. His only companion is an elderly storyteller, and the only guide to finding his mother is a dead man's diary. This transporting drama underscores the power of imagination in surviving, and ultimately overcoming, the catastrophe of war.

More than two weeks on from the terror attack in the town of Palma in Mozambique, around 20-thousand people remain unaccounted for.

The country's authorities have sent hundreds of soldiers into the town and have declared it free of terrorists, but the situation remains precarious.

Islamic State extremists known as al Shabab say they carried out the attack, though the group has no identifiable leader or ideology.

Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford sent this report.

The struggles of Mozambique, from its once majestic capital Maputo, to a village where recruits are being trained for the army. Subscribe to Our History: https://bit.ly/3v5mKBG

Children in Mozambique have a smaller chance of surviving their first year of life than anywhere else in the world. Every eight minutes war, starvation or disease claims the life of a Mozambiquan child. Little boys look like old men. In Mozambique youth is fleeting. This is the legacy of 25 years of armed conflict, which has severely wounded Africa's poorest nation. One million peasant farmers have fled their homes to refugee camps, where they live on food handouts. Famine threatens one quarter of the population.. The Mozambiquan people are struggling for survival. The origins of the conflict causing this suffering is investigated, stemming back to when the Mozambiquan revolution was paralysed over a decade ago.

This film was first broadcast: 24 Apr 1990
