Today in Movies on the Focus we are talking about: Hotel Rwanda: 1994. In Rwanda, the classification of the native population into Hutus and Tutsis, arbitrarily done by the colonial Belgians, is now ingrained within Rwandan mentality despite the Rwandan independence. Despite the Belgians having placed the Tutsis in a higher position during the Belgian rule, they have placed the majority Hutus in power after independence. Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu married to a Tutsi, Tatiana Rusesabagina, is the House Manager of the Hotel Des Milles Collines in Kigali. The Milles Collines, owned by Sabena (the national airline of Belgium), is a four-star hotel catering primarily to wealthy white westerners. Paul, who knows how to work the system to run the hotel effectively for its guests and for Sabena, is proud that most of the Caucasians who he meets in this professional capacity treat him with respect. After a specific incident, the relative calm between the Tutsi guerrillas and government-backed Hutu militia takes a turn. Paul's thought that the native population as a whole who are not directly involved in the conflict will be protected as the UN peacekeeping forces and thus the world is watching doesn't happen as the western world largely evacuates from Rwanda and abandons the natives. Such begins what will become a genocide of the Tutsi population. Paul, who is able to get his immediate family to the hotel which is still largely seen as a place of sanctuary, will have to use the considerable skills he has used to run the hotel as well as he has instead to keep himself, his family and any others taking refuge at the hotel alive, whether they be Hutu or Tutsi. Meanwhile, Colonel Oliver, a Canadian heading the UN peacekeeping forces, and Pat Archer with the Red Cross do what they can to assist Paul and to get people to safety first to the hotel then out of the country, while field journalists, like photographer Jack Daglish, try to bring the genocide back into the global media to have the world once again care about what is going on.

Positioned just off Gabon's coast and secluded from the rest of the globe, this stands as one of Africa's tiniest nations. Its populace is a blend of the descendents of slaves and the initial Portuguese settlers. Within these untouched islands, where Nature is so generous, the people of Sao Tome and Principe revel in a paradise of lush forests, towering peaks, and azure seas.

Floating in the Gulf of Guinea, this two-island nation, Africa's second-smallest, blends natural wonders with a gripping history. São Tomé & Príncipe (STP) is amazingly safe and welcoming to visitors, particularly ecotourists, for whom the advancing jungle is a delight. A canopy of green broken by spires of primordial rock, Sao Tome is a magnificent Lost World, offering fantastic beaches, jungle exploration, snorkeling, fishing, birdwatching and a handful of interesting accommodations.

Short Soviet documentary about São Tomé & Príncipe aired in 1981. STP was a Soviet ally after independence in 1975 under president Manuel Pinto da Costa and his MLSTP (Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe) party.
If anyone can create English (or any other language) subtitles from the Russian narration, I would be happy to upload them.

CONTRACT, a 79-minute docudrama film explores aspects of the African Diaspora, history and culture that are not widely known or are normally overlooked in mainstream, popular and scholarly discourse.
CONTRACT tells the compelling story of two African countries (Cape Verde and São Tome and Príncipe) forever linked by a history of poverty and slavery, and two people forever linked by the unbreakable bonds of family and love.
It tells the story of Cape Verdean indentured servants who left their homes for a better life only to be bound by "contracts" that won't ever be paid off. The film, at its heart, also documents the filmmaker's journey to reunite his uncle, an indentured servant as well, with his family, 44 years after leaving home on a contract. This film is not only a powerful emotional experience, it is an in-depth look into the past and the legacy of slavery.
It's an intense journey not only for the contract workers, receiving 10 cents per day and a $10 life retirement from the São Tomé and Príncipe government, but also for the filmmaker who returns to his roots in the making of this film.
CONTRACT, was filmed in the Cape Verde Islands, São Tomé & Príncipe, Portugal, and the United States.
With archival materials and discussion from Professor Dr. Noam Chomsky, Dr. Richard Jr. Lobban, Dr. Peter Mendy, Filmmaker and Writer Ike Karnick and others, footage includes interviews with artists, historians, and contract workers providing reflections on the history, people, culture, and music of Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.
CONTRACT was nominated for the Audience Award for Favorite Documentary during the 18th edition of the Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF.)
CONTRACT became the first Cape Verdean and São Tomé and Príncipe film ever to be the recipient of an Award For Best Documentary Filmmaking at the 12th Annual Roxbury International Film Festival. ‘CONTRACT’ wins the Best Feature Film Award at the 4th Cape Verde International Film Festival (CVIFF) held at Santa Maria Cultural Center in Sal, Cape Verde on 10/20/2013 and wins the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Film at the 1st edition of Cape Verde American Film Festival held in Washington, DC last May.
Everyone should see this film. Narrated in English. The languages: Creole (Cape Verdean and São Tomé and Príncipe,) English, and Portuguese with English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish subtitles.
