In Tunisian director Youssef Chebbi’s assured and gripping thriller, a young detective named Fatma (Fatma Oussaifi) investigates a disturbing series of connected deaths—all of them apparent suicides by self-immolation. Ashkal (“shapes” in Arabic) is set in the environs of a halted construction site for a district in northern Tunis that never came to be—called the Gardens of Carthage, it had been intended for dignitaries of the country’s former regime before the 2010 revolution. A nocturnal descent, the film uses startling imagery that evokes 21st-century political traumas, most blatantly the death of Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi. While Fatma combats misogyny in her own profession and political pressures in the city at large, she begins to succumb to obsession with an increasingly confounding case. Tunisian cinema has rebounded after 7 years. The industry which produced only two to three films annually in the 2000s, now prides itself with about a dozen feature films made each year.
A young generation of filmmakers and producers are taking advantage of newfound freedoms to tackle social upheavals, political issues and conflicts, among other subjects previously banished from the silver screen for decades.
Locals say they prefer their recent homemade films to foreign blockbusters.

Synopsis:
Après plus de deux décades au service de la radio Nationale Tunisienne, Youssef s'apprête à prendre sa retraite. Lors de sa dernière emission intitulée " Tunis by Night " Youssef se trouve vicieusement coupé d'antenne.
Sa fille cadette, Aziza, se voit déconnectée du rythme et des valeurs de sa famille. Elle se coupe les veines après une cascade de déceptions.
Brisé, Youssef se laisse engloutir dans cette ville qu'il ne reconnait plus…

بعد أكثر من عشرين سنة في خدمة الإذاعة الوطنية التونسيّة، يستعدّ يوسف للتّقاعد
، ينقطع البثّ عن يوسف اثناء اخر حلقات "تونس اليل".
في نفس الليلة، تقطع عزيزة ابنته الصغرى شرايينها بعد خيبات امل متتالية وذلك نتيجة عيشها في انفصال كلّي عن ايقاع و قيم عائلتها
ثائرا في صمت، يلتجا يوسف للحانة المحاذية للإذاعة و التي يتردد عليها يوميا
