In the heart of our village, nestled between dense forests and rolling hills, lived a family that everyone talked about. Mama Zuri, the wicked stepmother, and her stepson, Juma, were at the center of many whispered stories. I, Amani, was a childhood friend of Juma’s, and this is my account of what happened.
Mama Zuri was known for her sharp tongue and cruel ways. She was a widow who had taken in Juma after his father’s death. The village people whispered that she never wanted Juma in the first place. She had a son of her own, Kofi, and he was treated like a prince compared to Juma, who was often seen working in the fields from dawn until dusk, while Kofi played with other children.
One evening, I visited Juma’s house to help him with some chores. The sun was setting, casting long shadows over the village. Mama Zuri was in a foul mood, yelling at Juma for a minor mistake. She often did this, but that day was different. There was an edge to her anger, something darker.
