South Africa’s new envoy to the US, Mcebisi Jonas, is under fire for comments he made back in 2020, when he called Donald Trump “racist, homophobic, and narcissistic” after Joe Biden won the US election. These remarks have resurfaced just as Jonas steps into his new role, tasked with fixing the tense relationship between the two countries. Things got worse earlier this year when Trump’s administration expelled South Africa’s ambassador and froze US aid over land reforms. Trump has also criticised South Africa’s case against Israel at the ICJ and claimed the country supports hostile regimes. As Jonas takes office, both sides face the challenge of moving past heated words and rebuilding diplomatic ties.
