"The Road To Sunrise" was submitted as Malawi’s entry to the 91st Academy Awards in 2018 in the Best Foreign Language Film category, the first Malawian film to do so.

Exploited by men and ridiculed by the world, two young women, Rubia and Watipa, learn to rely on each other as they struggle to survive in the rough, unforgiving townships of Blantyre, Malawi.

After Rubia develops an unlikely love affair with a naïve young man, she begins to review her life. When she refuses to have sex with one of her clients, a very rich businessman, he violently attacks her and tries to rape her. In self defense, she stabs him to death. She is arrested and charged with murder. The ensuing trial becomes a battle not just to escape the gallows but also a journey to her inner emancipation.
