This film concerns the destinies of three young men, Mahmoud, Taleb and Boubacar.
From deepest Mauritania where traditions based on a nomadic lifestyle are still strong. Their lives unfold with few surprises from dawn till dusk surrounded by the sands of the Sahara desert. One of the young men lives in the west on the Atlantic coast bordering; other lives in the centre of the country on the edge of strange,
jagged outcrops that dominate the heights of the Adrar plateau. The third is based in the South-West near the Senegal River, where ethnic mixing and cultural exchanges are the most developed. Same age and also the same unique, profound regard that reflects confidence and serenity.
Their story is that of simple and debonair young men seeking to be true to an ideal and a faith fashioned and formed by the vast expanses of sand and the desert winds. -

In the far west of the Sahara lies Mauritania. Ten years ago, this country was a busy crossing for migrants from West Africa to the Canary Islands, but since the Spanish coast guard have taken up patrols, no one has gotten through.
Mauritania is one of those countries that has managed to escape the attention of the world press. A country of sand where the first cities were not built until the 1960s, but urbanisation has brought many desert customs to the city. Notorious is the habit of force-feeding young girls with camel milk and breadcrumbs dipped in olive oil, a banned custom intended to make them more attractive on the marriage market.
It turns out that there is much more happening in Mauritania that they would rather hide.

*WHY 8MM & SUPER8 HOME MOVIE ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE IS IMPORTANT?*
Old Family films shot on 8mm/super8 (sometimes even on 16mm) are an invaluable collection of unseen personal testimonies from our history.
Unfortunately, the condition of these film reels is often dramatic, as they are stored in inadequate places and handed down to individuals who don’t know how to project them.
At Archival Footage Service, we strive to build an archive of family films that is accessible to everyone through our YouTube channel.

In human cultures in general, and perhaps particularly in Africa, the landscape is the first shrine of tradition. From the sand dunes of Mauritania to the currents of River Senegal, to the Lions of the Beninese savannah to the spirits of the forests of Gabon, this series explores the origin, the nature and the survival of deep links between several populations in West Africa and their habitat.
Each episode takes us to discover an emblematic landscape: the river (Senegal), the desert (Mauritania), the forest (Gabon) and the savannah (Benin). A compass of escape and meeting which rests on two main pillars: the spectacular character of the places, often classified with the UNESCO world heritage, and the charisma of the main characters who are transmitters of their respective traditions.

If you were to do a Google search on the West African nation of Mauritania, you’ll more than likely be confronted with some depressing reports about the horrors of slavery, poverty, violence and terrorism which currently plague this otherwise enthralling country.
Geographically, Mauritania is in the significant position of being right on the Sahul. This area forms the gateway between the deserts of northern Africa and the savanna’s of the south.
This also translates into a large cultural contrast between the lighter skinned Arabs from the north (sometimes called “White Moors”), and the darker skinned Haratin (The “Black Moors”), Halpulaar, Fulani, Mande and Wolof peoples from the south.
This diversity has resulted from the multitude of tribal nations and empires, that have come and gone over the last two millennia – such as the Berber tribes, the Yemeni arabs, and the Ghana empire. This was followed by the Moors, and in more recent times, the French Empire.
In the 2020s, much of the population are still nomadic. Arabic is the official language, although French is still widely spoken. Mauritania achieved its independence from France in November 1960, and established itself as an Islamic Republic.
Last year, the CIA world factbook reported that a massive 99.9% of the Population are Sunni Muslim. There are also national blasphemy laws, which can result in the death penalty for those found guilty.
The giant Sahara Desert takes up around 90% of Mauritania’s landmass. Hence, most of the nations 4.5 million residents live beyond the desert, on the Atlantic coast. This powerful landscape is rich in natural resources such as gold, phosphate, gypsum, iron ore and of course, Oil.
The exporting of these resources has overtaken traditional agriculture as the lifeblood of the national economy. In addition, the wide, blustery waters off the coastline contain some of the best fishing areas on the planet. The capital, Nouakchott sits on the central coast, and is home to around a quarter of the nations people.
The 22hr journey through Mauritania's Sahara Desert on one of the longest trains in the world has been at the top of our bucket list, when we had first heard of this adventure years ago. This film explores our experience in Mauritania - an incredibly foreign country in the vast Sahara Desert of west Africa, with a culture and way of life very different to what we were familiar with.
But the adventure was about more than just the epic train ride. From enormous camel markets, remote oases, ancient Saharan trade route villages, mysterious geological formations and Islamic libraries of Quranic texts, Mauritania is a place that humbles you with its unique and off the beaten track experiences.
This was a journey to open our minds and perspectives, and reframe what travel and adventure mean to us.
