The Namibia Film Week will kick off on Wednesday in Windhoek.

The four-day Namibian film screening events will showcase shorts, features, and documentaries all produced by Namibians.

The initiative, a brainchild of the Namibia Film Commission, is part of their mandate to advance the local film industry.

Film Week further aims to create a platform to showcase new local films, create an appetite for local film productions and influence how people perceive the world through film.

The public will be treated to a different range of genres, film formats, and lengths throughout the four nights.

On Wednesday, Ompata, a high-tempo film by Nino Pequeno, will open the film week, followed by films such as Zula Boyz by veteran filmmaker Vickson Hangula.

The films will be screened at different venues across Windhoek, such as Lemon Tree Restaurant on the 26 and 29 of October, Katutura Community Art Centre on the 27th and the City of Windhoek New Building Upper Parking on the 28th of October.

The gates open at 19:30 and admission is free.

When money start to lead us… we don’t think of the circumstance. This is a movie based on what is going on in the world about human trafficking, specifically in Africa. A foreign billionaire son is sent to a job to Namibia in search of a exact blood cluster that is not common in the world, and a deal went erroneous.

KANI RELEASING - Desert of Namibia
#yokoyamanaka #yuumikawaii #山中瑶子 #河合優実 #ナミビアの砂漠 #本予告

21-year-old Kana (rising star Yuumi Kawai) works a disaffected job at a beauty salon, where the expectations placed on women her age are plain to see. In her personal life, her mood oscillates between soaring highs and deep lows. Bored with her slavish boyfriend, she begins another relationship, the novel excitement it brings soon devolving into an increasingly volatile predicament. Burning bridges, uncommitted and trapped in her own life, Kana makes her way towards the inner desert of her emotions.

Alternating between claustrophobic blocking, ample zooms and expressive whip-pans brought together by dryly comedic editing and an intense actor’s direction, the sophomore effort from director Yoko Yamanaka (the youngest filmmaker to have a film selected at the Berlin International Film Festival with her 2017 debut Amiko) provides a frank and dynamic examination of womanhood and mental health in contemporary Japan. Inspired by Yasuzo Masumura as much as the Cassavetes/Rowlands collaboration, Yamanaka breaks out with a work of stark confrontational honesty.

Opens in New York at #Metrograph on May 16
Opens in Los Angeles at @laemmle on May 21

World Premiere: Director's Fortnight, 2024
New York Premiere: MOMI First Look Film Festival

KANI RELEASING
Taking its name from the noun “crab” – in reference to Yasujiro Ozu’s custom-made tatami-level tripod – Kani is a new home video label dedicated to leveling the gaze and furthering the availability and understanding of Asian cinema in North America.

Focusing on genre-defying films, Kani aims to expand the canon by bolstering up-and-coming filmmakers as well as reintroducing underseen repertory classics in context.

Mirage

A short film about the origin and evolution of Skeleton Bay.

Since it was unveiled in 2008, the wave at Skeleton Bay has become part of every surfer's lexicon, a synonym for never-ending sand bottomed tubes. But unlike Pipeline, G-Land, or [insert your preferred iconic world class wave here], the two-kilometre-long left on the edge of the Namib Desert is in a constant state of flux. If satellite imagery is anything to go by, the wave we know today didn’t even exist 30 years ago.

Mirage is a 15-minute documentary that traces the genesis of the Namibian sandspit and how it became one of the most sought after waves on the planet, as told by pioneering locals and some of the best tube riders in the world.

But before you put it on the top of your post-pandemic bucket list, perhaps take heed of Koa Smith’s veiled advice from the film: “People think oh, easy, Skeleton Bay. I’m going to go get the barrel of my life. But then they show up here and realise it’s more like Teahupoo on sand.”
